federal grant to create a task force of sheriff's deputies, oakland police and the chp to help make up for oakland's under staffed department and get a handle on criminals creating problems throughout the region. >> criminals in oakland just don't stay in oakland. they use the 880 corridor to go in and out of other cities. >> they have the crime problem but it's the criminals don't recognize borders. >> reporter: police chief ken james says 95% of emeryville crime is committed by people of other cities, often oakland. >> if we need extra help for a problem area, there are 90 experienced officers we can call on to give us a hand. i can't think of any chief that would say this is a bad idea. >> reporter: he says he will have his team ready to spear head the effort. >> we think that if we can have a direct approach on targeted areas we will be successful. >> reporter: congress woman barbara lee is behind the plan and she is doing her best to secure the federal funds. he would like to get the task force on the street right away realistically he says it will take at least a year and a half

gold artifact stolen from the oakland museum is back. police returned that artifact shown here, a jewelry box, to the museum today. the box is worth about $800,000. it was stolen in january. investigators say on sunday they arrest this had man, a parolee andre franklin, and they found evidence on him that linked him not only to the burglary in january but also to another burglary in november of last year. franklin has been charged in both crimes. the museum has said it made internal changes to protect its valuables. >> we have really worked tirelessly for about four months to improve and are still working to make sure that is -- that everything we can do is in place. >> police are still searching for a few items that were stolen including two pistols and some gold nuggets. >> a semiautomatic rifle like this one stole friend an unmarked san francisco police car found across the bay. oakland officers traced the ar-15 to a house on the 1300 block. several people were detained but no one arrested. they are still trying to figure out how the rifle taken from the patrol car on saturd

220 pounds. she was last seen walking on 34th and telegraph on oakland. she's been having a tough time since her husband died last year. a $1,000 reward is offered for her safe return. anyone with information, call the oakland police department. >>> an under cover operation led to six women under prostitution charges. cops met the women at various motels. they were arrested. the suspects from from oakland, san jose and vallejo. their ages range from 18 to 46. >>> three people dead and one fighting for her death. it happened on the 100 block of eastmoor avenue. monty francis is there with an update on the investigation. >> good evening. we are told by a family friend the three people killed are all part of the same family, a mother and her two sons, ages 16 and 23. the fourth person in the car is a girlfriend of one of the sons. she's listed in critical condition. there's a considerable amount of debris here in the road along with flowers and candles left in memory of the victims. the red car was parked here, making a u-turn from the parking spot when a bmw came speeding down the street

police chief bill bratton. he's in oakland now to make major changes to the city's crime fighting strategies. bratton, who is now a consultant, held a news conference alongside observing's police chief jordan at headquarters today. bratton says bringing down the number of homicides, robberies and burglaries is his top priority. he also says it's tough when you have a police department that needs a lot more officers. >> it's a department that i think you all appreciate is severely understaffed. and i don't use that term lightly. it is a small department for a very large and vital city. and at the same time when you have a small department, it's very important to focus those officers appropriately. >> bratton will be working alongside thomas frazier appointed on monday by a federal judge to be a compliance director in the city of oakland. >>> in san francisco a man accused of killing a teenaged girl during a dui hit-and-run will be charged with three felonies. police say brewer hit 17-year-old chang as she crossed the buoulevard saturday night. he faces up to ten years in prison. >>
